If you are looking to buy tattoo designs, there are a few things that you need to keep in mind. As you already know, tattoo designs can have a great deal of personal meaning, so it is important to think about how you feel and what your relationship is to the personal design.

Make sure you know what you are getting in to and take some time to really communicate your own ideas about what you want.

Firstly, when you are looking to buy tattoo designs, remember that you will need to think about size. The larger a tattoo is, the more detail you can have; you’ll find that a sleeve or a chest piece will allow you a great deal more detail than a piece that is only two or thee inches square. This holds true, and while some tattooists have made a real name for themselves with doing fine detail work, it is important to remember that this rule will hold true, and a good tattooist will tell you what can and cannot last so keep this in mind when you are looking for designs for tattoos.

The time right after your tattoo has been inked is when it will look the sharpest and the clearest; after that, especially if the lines are very fine, the ink might start to bleed a little.

Getting a tattoo…?

I want to get a tattoo that a friend designed for me and my question is: Do the tattoo artists not like it if you bring in a picture of what you want? I want it to look just like the drawing. I’m willing to maybe change it a little but I want something original and a tattoo designed just for me is that.
Also, I think I want to get it on my ankle. It’s going to be really small and I figure it’s in a place that won’t be that noticeable. And I could cover it up with a band-aid if needed. Do you think that’s a good idea?
Thanks. :)

Vanessa answers:

They definitely wouldn’t mind. I think they like it when people come in with something original.

Maria asks…

Ankle Tattoo + First Time Tattoo Quick Questions?

I am FINALLY getting around to getting my first tattoo. After some fiddling around I picked a design but I had some basic questions (and I promise none of them will ask how much it hurts!) This will end up being an ankle tattoo positioned about 2 inches above the bone that juts out (since mine REALLY sticks out!)
After hours of drawing and coloring here is the completed design I came up with:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v203/skyshadowkitty/pring.jpg

I was wondering first off, is that much detail possible in a tattoo of that size? All my friends who have tats did not want that much detail in them. That is the actual tattoo size. Another question is about how long would a tattoo that size (about 3.4 inches by 2.5 inches) take considering the detail? I tend to get fidgety and I’m concerned about the tattoo taking a long time. Also, while I know the answer really changes by location a GENERAL idea of how much his would cost would be very helpful!

As for a few basic questions,do parlors normally just take walk ins or should I expect to need to make an appointment? Also, is it common for people to come in just to get a price on something? I am planning on getting it on my 23rd birthday (in April) but I’d like to go ahead and get an idea of cost. I am also out in the sun ALOT in the summer, what is a good sun block to help keep my tattoo from fading over time? Also, I have heard alot of mixed opinions about taking a few pain killers before I go to get the tat. Some say do some say don’t. Whats the best plan on that? I have a high pain tolerance plus a few good friends coming along to keep me distracted. Also, should I expect to try and get alot of vitamin C into my system a few days before and then following the tattoo? I know I should eat a good meal before going to get the tattoo.

Any advice from anyone would be great!
Oop forgot, is April an ‘ok’ time to get a tattoo? I have heard mixed reviews one if there is a time of year that is better than another. Any opinions?

Vanessa answers:

1. That much detail is possible in a tattoo that size.
2. The time it will take to complete the tattoo is relative to the speed of the artist and how well you sit. The faster the artist does not necessarily mean the better in terms of the quality of work. Blending and color packing takes time. Estimated: 1-2 hours?
3. Cost is also very relative, even more so than the time question, depending on where you live, what shop you go to, pricing by time or piece, and shop minimum.
4. Depending on the shop, some take walk-ins, some are appointment only, some are both, but depending on scheduling and how busy they are may not be able to take walk-ins at the moment. Appointments are the best route, this helps to ensure that both you and the artist will be there. 
5. It is common for people to ask for a price on a tattoo- Nothing wrong with that! However, you get what you pay for. Going from shop to shop and pricing a tattoo may not be the way you want to go. Go to a tattoo shop and feel it out on a social level and on a cleanliness level.
6. Brand of sunscreen – don’t buy junk  SPF 45, SPF 50 are good. Just don’t apply sunscreen to a fresh tattoo.
7. Pain Killers – If clients ask me, I’ll usually suggest none, or suggest ibuprofen. If you don’t have a problem with either, take it or leave it. You don’t want to take anything that thins the blood.
8. Vitamin C is a good thing – so is eating a good meal.

Your Questions About Japanese Tattoo Designs Dragons

Richard asks…

What does a Japanese Dragon Symbolize? ?

Im looking to get a tattoo, and I love the designs of the dragons tattoo‘s, but I want something meaningful to me. I need something that symbolizes perseverance, strength, toughness, never giving up, aiming high etc.. Does a Japanese dragon symbolize this?

Vanessa answers:

There are nine types of Chinese dragons,
This is a pretty broad question because the history of dragons is quite extensive. But I will give it a shot. There are nine types of Chinese dragons, also regarded as the Oriental Dragons. You should also note that nine is a very lucky number to the Chinese. These are: the horned dragon, the celestial dragon, the spiritual dragon, the winged dragon, the dragon of hidden treasures, the coiling dragon, the yellow dragon, and the dragon king. Each of these dragon types has a special attribute to them. The Horned dragon is also know as Lung. They are the most powerful of the Oriental Dragons and are completely deaf. They have the power to produce rain, too. It should also be noted that the head points South, and the tail points North. In addition, they are a symbol of the East and the sun. The Celestial dragon protects the mansions of the gods to the Chinese, and the Spiritual dragon creates rain and wind for mankind. The Dragon of Hidden Treasures helps keep watch over concealed wealth, and the coiling dragon lives in the water, primarily lakes and deep, deep waters. The yellow dragon is especially important, for this dragon emerged from water and aided the Emperor Fu Shi by showing him writing. The Dragon King is really four dragons, and these dragons keep watch over the four main seas. They were honored and respected, for they were the ones the Chinese went to if there was little or no rain. The four lived in the North, South, East, or West waters. I hope this helps, dragons make very cool tattoos but talk with your artist and feel him/her out to see if he/she knows about the history. If he/she doesnt know, I feel that, this is an indication that they lack the passion and knowledge that comes accross in a good ink piece.
I hope this helps in some way..my souce is as listed below..
Good Luck..they do make good lookin Tatoos..

Jenny asks…

Can you help me with my tattoo sleeve?

I’m thinking of getting a full tattoo sleeve on my left arm
i’m 16 now and I’m thinking of getting done after december 7th next year when I’ll be 18 so I have a least a year and half to think about what I want done.
I’m thinking of getting a full japanese style design because Japanese Tattoo‘s have always intrested me and I think they look beautiful. Hopefully if i still want one next year i’ll be getting a dragon, koi and a lotus flower on it amongst other things that I have yet to think of so i was wondering have what I though of cover
my whole arm or can you recommend some other designs that
I can put on tattoo?
Also can anyone recomend me some good tattoists/tattoo shops in the northwest of England
Liverpool,Manchester,Preston and surronding areas that are experinced in japanese style tattoo‘s.

Thanks for your help :)

Vanessa answers:

The best tip I can give you, is to research the artist well and find one that can give you something truly original. Free-hand tattoo’s will always be unique, and if your artist is good he can incorporate any styles or influences into the finished work. Japanese influenced tatt’s are beautiful to look at, and can easily be added to at a later date.

Japanese Koi Tattoo: Help?

Hey There Guys,
I have been considering a jap trad koi half tattoo from chest to elbow for some time now. I’d like it to symbolise my premature birth fighting for survival going from the bottom of the waterfall (elbow) up towards my chest, as leaves (representing time) flow past. I may even consider it evolving into a dragon, however, I’m still unsure.

I have looked at many pictures, and I’m not a good drawer so designing my own proved hard. I have two questions:

Does anyone have any ideas or examples?
What steps should I take to get an idea onto paper?

Vanessa answers:

I’m an artist and I’ve recently done a Koi fish tatt design for a client of mine. ( http://coquettishmish.blogspot.com/2010/12/swimming-in-ink.html )
I don’t know if it’s the type of koi you’re looking for but maybe you can get your tattoo artist to work his way around it to include the waterfall and stuff.
Hope this helped, good luck.

John asks…

Japanese style tattoos. can someone help me out with the etiquette?

does anyone know if its bad luck to have koi fish (two of them), a prodomiately red dragon and a rising phoenix (excuse spelling) in the same design? Any information would be helpful.

Vanessa answers:

Bad luck, you need odd number of fish. Red is not the lucky est colour try blue. If you want a red tone, go pink.

Make sure phoenix is on left side of body

Your Questions About Tattoo Designs And Sayings

Steven asks…

sayings for a tattoo? and a tattoo design? 10 pts?

What are some good quotes/sayings for a tattoo that aren’t that big. I don’t want anything stupid or meaningless. Anyone have any good ideas or sites?! Also i want a small (girly tattoo) for my foot or maybe a tattoo for my lower back (haven’t decided which i want yet, also the saying will be a seperate tattoo on my wrist or something)! Whoever is first to answer these questions the best ; 10 pts =]
i’m only asking for ideas, that’s all? but okay. I looked at alot and i havent found one i truely liked yet.

Vanessa answers:

My favorite quote ever is “Que sera, sera.”
My mom used to sing me a song with that in it iand it is really sweet.
It means “What will be, will be” in spanish.

Also, there are some cool Latin quotes that would be fun.
Like, “Amor vincit omnia” Which means Love conquers all.
This website has more:

http://latinquotes.net/love/

Or if you are looking for something in English you can go to www.quotegarden.com
They have quotes about EVERYTHING

Chris asks…

does anyone know any sayings or designs that i could get as a tattoo under my boob (like miley cyrus)?

im getting a tattoo under my boob like Miley cyrus has, and i need a saying or a design. in english or another language. i want it to kinda mean somthing, but sound pretty when put together too. thanks so much!:)

Vanessa answers:

My friend has a tattoo under her boob that says “Infinity and beyond..”
I think thats really cute even if it is buzz lightyears catch phrase haha.
If you want it to mean something you should chose something yourself so it’s closer to heart.
If someone else choses it’s not really gonna mean much to you.

Donald asks…

I need to know the Old Nose translation for “Will not Surrender”. I can’t find it anywhere online.?

If anyone could offer some other Old Norse Sayings that pertain to freedom, valor, justice, and things of that nature it would be greatly appreciated. I’m looking for some to go along with my tattoo design. Thanks

Vanessa answers:

You need to specify whether the first word in English is I, you, he/she, we or they as this affects the form of the verb. Here are a couple of alternative phrases in Old Norse:

Ek sé svangan mann taka ost.
I see a hungry man take some cheese.

Dvergarnir foera konunginum gylltan baug.
The dwarves bring the king a golden ring.

Thomas asks…

Think of words that describe one of your most favorite places, people, or things.

Think of a quality you cherish in yourself or someone you love.

If you are religious in any way, consider words or phrases that would reflect your views (for example, if I were to get another tat, I would want Peace, Hope, Love because those are the good things He gave us).

Look up some quotes on life and love online and search through what you find. You might find a phrase you simply fall in love with that describes you perfectly.

That’s all I’ve got. Hope that helps a bit!

Your Questions About Tattoos For Women On Arm

Laura asks…

Question for women with upper arm tattoos / sleeves…?

… do you tend to pick tops based on whether it matches the tattoo(s) or not, or do you just wear whatever like you did before?

I’ve had tattoos on both upper arms for a little while but last week got quite a big one which, along with the other two on that upper arm, fills up the majority of it. Now I’ve had that done I suddenly find myself thinking “Oh that top looks rubbish now” and more restricted in what I wear! I never thought I would pay much attention because as far as I’m concerned it’s just a part of my skin and you don’t pick clothes to match your freckles or birthmarks do you! Maybe it’s just because it’s so new that I’m very aware of it, I don’t know. They’re all black and grey though so I don’t have the colour issue, but for just styles and patterns clashing. Did any of you feel this when you first had large work done on your upper arms or were you normal about it from the start?

Oh and the usual disclaimer… this is not an opportunity to spread your negative opinions about tattoos, tattoos on arms, tattoos on women, whatever. Either answer the question or take your ignorance elsewhere!
Haha chest pieces would also come under this!! It’s weird though, when I see a chest piece or arm tattoo or whatever on another woman I never think ‘Hey that clashes with your top!’, it always seems to work! I think I’m just too paranoid when it comes to my own image ha!

Vanessa answers:

Hey Mama! I have two full sleeves, and both are very different, so I wouldn’t be able to match my tops with my tattoos. My left arm has a lot of reds, oranges, blues, and yellows. My right arm is mostly green, yellow and brown, so it’s too difficult to match!

William asks…

Meaningful Tattoo ideas for the upper arm on a woman?

I like the look of upperarm tattoos on woman. Not a whole sleeve, but just the upper part. I was looking at some but I have no idea what I want because I want it to be meaningful but I cant think of anything. What are ideas? if you have any tattoos what are they? No rude comments please. If you have a problem with tattoos then dont even bother wasting your time on trying to change my mind because your not going to. Thanks!

Vanessa answers:

I think that stars with designs & Pixie dust would be so pretty.
Flowers with vines.
Cut out of stars w/ pixie dust.

John asks…

Tattoo on woman’s arm, shaving or waxing afterward or none ?

I know that my arm will be shaved before the tattoo (i am getting a full sleeve) but after i have it done should i keep shaving my arm ? start waxing the arm ? or just leave it for the hair to re-grow.
i know that if i let the hair re-grow then the tattoo will look less colored and to keep it nice and vibrant i should have no arm hair.

If i shave will the hair grow back really prickly and look weird after like 2 years of shaving ?
Does waxing damage the tattoos ?

i know i am not allowed to wax or shave for about 3 weeks after having my tattoo done to make sure it is fully healed :)
I know it is personal preference but i just want peoples opinions especially if you are a female with a sleeve or an arm tattoo too. :)
My arm hair is blonde
and i have not shaved them or waxed them before

Vanessa answers:

Well i don’t have any tattoos on my arms but i do on my legs and i imagine it would pretty much be the same for both. Just keep shaving…

Charles asks…

Why do tattoos on women repulse me?

I’m not saying I have anything against women who have tattoos. I’m just asking why are tattoos a turnoff for me when it comes to women looking attractive with them. Even a small one hidden is not cute in my mind and if it’s on the arms or back, forget it. Would anyone happen to know why they are such a turnoff for me?

Vanessa answers:

They are a serious turn off for me too. I will never, ever get one.
Your feelings aren’t abnormal at all, different people are just attracted to different types of people.

Lisa asks…

Why are women expected to only have small nonvisible tattoos?

I’m just wondering why men expect women to have small tattoos that can be covered up. I have 4, but I chose to have a black phoenix on the inside of my forearm tattooed as a memorial for my father (he had a blue phoenix on his arm when he died). I later want to add symbols for “Father” tattooed near the bird.

I haven’t really gotten any negative feedback from it, but I just noticed that a lot of people on this forum think that women should only have them small, cute in nonvisible locations.

Do guys prefer small cute tattoos like butterflies and flowers on women, or do some prefer that the tattoos have some kind of meaning? I’ll never regret mine, but I think it’s unfair that my father was covered in tattoos without anyone questioning him, yet some think it’s “unusual” for me to have a large tat in a visible spot like my arm. It’s a bit of a double standard. Your thoughts? Thanks for answering.

Vanessa answers:

Personally I don’t see any reason why men and women should be treated differently with regard to tattoos. But I agree with you, there’s often a double standard. It also often comes out in the many, many questions which purely ask whether women with tattoos are still attractive, as if a woman’s only role in life is to be looked at by men.

I think that very often the people who believe that ‘small cute’ tattoos are OK on women but larger ones aren’t probably just haven’t given it all that much thought from this angle. They have a sort of vague idea that tattoos are ‘unfeminine’, and that women should therefore only get ‘cute’ tattoos to counteract this, without having really considered the implications of these ideas – the fact that it suggests that a woman’s main function is to be attractive, to appeal to other people, to be non-threatening; that she’s a visual object rather than a human being with a head full of valid, interesting, unique ideas. Which I think is pretty sad, really.

In some ways I actually find this halfway-house suggestion that teeny-tiny flowers and hearts and butterflies are OK on women, but nothing else is, even more irritating than those people who just don’t like tattoos full stop. Although I do like tattoos, I don’t expect everyone else to as well. But the whole point of tattoos is that they can express anything you want them to, and to suggest that women should be restricted to certain subjects, sizes and placements when choosing their tattoos in order to ‘fit in’ is really hypocritical. There’s nothing wrong with flowers, butterflies and so on; they can make great tattoos and if someone does want them, that’s fine. If that’s the tattoo someone truly wants then it’s great, in fact. But I suspect that in some cases women are half-heartedly driven to get these kinds of tattoos for fear that if they got anything more individual and personal, people would ask too many questions and look down their noses, and that’s such a shame.

So what I would say is, well done you for getting the tattoos you wanted! The more people do that, and show the world why it’s important, the less ‘cuteness’ will be the main issue, and the better off we’ll all be.

Hope this helps!
